If you would like to receive NEWS about Noss Head Lighthouse Compound – please: click here and type “Noss Head Lighthouse Alerts” into the subject line. We shall then keep you updated if the “under offer” position changes and it returns for sale. This does happen sometimes. Our own experience at Strathy Point Lighthouse Compound proves the point. It went under offer in 1999 but the first sale to another person fell through. We ended up successfully buying that compound when it came back up for sale – so never give up. Noss Head might come up for sale again..

Situation: Noss Head lighthouse compound sits on a promontory tip at the north east coast of Caithness, approximately four miles outside of Wick. These former lighthouse buildings are accessed by a publicly adopted road which terminates at the car park near Castle Sinclair Girnigoe. After the road end, the property is accessed by private track that is around 400 metres long.

The land is bounded by a dry stone wall which spans Noss Head from north to south, effectively dividing the lighthouse station from the rest of the headland.

The dramatic cliffs of Noss Head project into the North Sea, with fabulous sea views. You can see both Castle Sinclair Girnigoe and Ackergill Tower, an impressive 16th century keep.

Noss Head Lighthouse – Seven Bay Former Stable Block

The seven bay workshop was originally used for the day to day operation of the lighthouse. Comprising workshops, stable and gig house the building is a versatile space.

There is a walled garden to the south of the cottages; this is enclosed on four sides by stone built walls and is currently covered with lawn but historically would have been used as a kitchen garden for the lighthouse keepers.

To the south west of the property you can view the impressive remains of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe; historically one of the seats of the Sinclair family who governed the area as the Earls of Caithness. Perched atop a needle-thin rock peninsula that rises up to 18m above the sea in Sinclair’s Bay; it is accessible only by a bridge spanning a dry moat. The crumbling remnants of the castle are a popular local visitor attraction. Notably Castle Sinclair Girnigoe was listed by the World Monuments Fund as one of the most important examples of an unchanged late medieval/early modern fortified complex in Scotland.

Navigation around the coastal seaways north of Scotland has always been treacherous, particularly the cliffs and skerries by Noss Head and Sinclair’s Bay – the final resting place of many wrecks. In the early 19th century a spate of wrecks of larger commercial vessels such as the brigantine Lonsdale and the full rigged ship Dove, may have prompted moves to install the lighthouse in 1849. Designed by the engineer Alan Stevenson, of the famed ‘Lighthouse Stevensons’; it is notable as the first example of the use of diagonal framing for the glass of the lantern. The lighthouse was automated in 1987 and the original Fresnel lens is now at the museum in Wick.
