Lighthouse Keepers’ Houses
For Sale – Tarbat Ness Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages (c) 2013 Tain Cottage
Specifically for our readers, we can share an exclusive from the Lighthouses For Sale website. A wonderful couple emailed us with an absolute treasure. They have owned the two lighthouse keepers’ cottages at Tarbat Ness for 24 years and now reluctantly decided to sell. They asked whether we would be interested in putting these idyllic houses onto our website. You bet.
For the avoidance of doubt, the actual lighthouse tower is NOT for sale and is still fully functional – being operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board. However, the two former lighthouse keepers’ cottages and a splendid sea view are for
Tarbat Ness – Iconic Coastal Home (c) 2013 Russel Wills
This wonderful property is located in a spectacularly beautiful and peaceful situation at the tip of Tarbat Ness peninsula.
The owner has arranged for an excellent video walk-through of the property which gives a very helpful insight …
The two semi-detached former lighthouse keepers’ cottages enjoy magnificent unobstructed views – eastwards, over low cliffs, across the Moray Firth to the Cairngorms, and westward, over pasture, to the Dornoch Firth and mountains of Sutherland.
Seals, dolphins and whales can often be seen just off the rocky shore – about a hundred yards from the cottages. Portmahomack village, three miles away, has a village shop, restaurants, and golf course. The Tarbat Discovery Centre, and a sheltered gently-shelving sandy beach are close too.
The north cottage is the primary residence which the current owner utilises. It has been extensively refurbished, with central LPG heating and beautiful fittings and furnishings throughout, including granite counter-tops and an indoor Jacuzzi spa. It is protected by an intruder alarm, and has two sitting rooms, and one bedroom.
The south cottage is the guest and rental cottage. It has a large sitting-dining room and three bedrooms – one double, one with twin-beds, and one with bunk beds.
With regret, due to becoming octogenarians, the owners can no longer comfortably make the long-haul flight journey each year from California to Tarbat Ness – as they have done for the past 24 years. Therefore, for the first time in almost a quarter of a century, the two former lighthouse keepers’ cottages at this splendid lighthouse station are for sale.

We shall make the introductions between you and the owner of Tarbat Ness Lighthouse Cottages with our compliments.
POST SCRIPT: For completeness, and to answer a question that has been emailed to us more than once….
As we are not an estate agency, we did recommend one of the top-end agencies in the country to the owners of Tarbat Ness Keepers’ Cottages.
Thereafter we did introduce one of our readers to that estate agency.
We achieved a successful sale.
The estate agency got the commission.
The owner was that concerned at who had done the work to complete the deal (and who had not), he sent a large cheque/donation to Lighthouses for Sale Or Rent as an honourarium (we operate at break-even/not-for-profit, so donations are very welcome)…
Proof of owner’s decency. He recognised who actually sold his lighthouse property. We retain this proof of payment in case the estate agency become a little prickly at their lacklustre approach being called out.
The estate agency concerned could not even be bothered to send a courtesy “thank you” note. We will not be recommending them to anyone anytime soon!
