Trinity House built the current Whitby Lighthouse in 1858 on Ling Hill from design plans by James Walker. Originally there were a pair of towers, aligned north-south and showing fixed lights over Whitby Rock. However, the station was altered in 1890 with a light of increased efficiency being installed in the smaller tower. Hence the other tower was closed down.

Whitby Lighthouse Tower was automated in 1992. The light, lens, beam etc., is monitored and controlled remotely via Trinity House Central Planning Unit at Harwich.
