Dunnet Head Lighthouse Station
Iconic buildings in a very special location: far, far north.

Dunnet Head Lighthouse Station

The lighthouse station is located north of Dunnet village, this amazing set of lighthouse buildings stands close to the north east corner of Dunnet Bay. To the north, the land gently rises to form Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on mainland Britain where the cliffs fall 300ft sheer into the Pentland Firth. On a clear day the northern end commands some of the most extensive views you are likely to find anywhere in northern Scotland. Even as far as the Orcadian Archipelago
The Old Man of Hoy, Orkney Is Visible On Clear Days
Here at the Lighthouses For Sale or Rent website we love the likes of Duncansby Head which is the most north easterly lighthouse in the UK. But one of our top three favourites is Dunnet Head Lighthouse Station. Bearing in mind the subscribers to this website currently own Noss Head and previously owned Ailsa Craig island Lighthouses and Strathy Point Lighthouse Station, with the original taste for lighthouse life 35 years ago on Davaar Island Lighthouse Station, naming Dunnet Head Lighthouses in our top 3 is our way of saying this is a definite contender if you are “bagging” lighthouse stations.

The icing on the cake being the fact you can now holiday at this wonderful place and stay in the actual keepers houses.

Dunnet Head Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages
Please note, these pictures date from the earlier “sale” brochure of 2014 and are intended ONLY for reference purposes.
Sitting above the cliffs Dunnet Head Lighthouses were built by the Stevenson family in 1831.
Dunnet Head has stunning sea cliffs and coastal grassland. These are home to puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, kittiwakes, shags and cormorants, and RSPB undertake annual seabird monitoring work and offer Seabird Walks in the summer. Of strategic importance during World War II, Dunnet Head has a number of old military buildings still standing on site.
Dunnet Head Lighthouse Compound: Comfortable Interior
The Queen Mother had visited the lighthouse on several occasions, the last being on 8 October 1979 when Mr Malcolm, Principal Lightkeeper, gave a conducted tour of the station. The Queen Mother later had tea with Mr Malcolm and his wife and met the other lightkeepers and their families residing at the station. The lighthouse accommodation at Dunnet Head comprises in part…
Cottage 1: Lounge, Kitchen, 3 Bedrooms, Family Bathroom.
Cottage 2: Lounge, Kitchen, 3 Bedrooms, Family Bathroom.
Cottage 3: Lounge, Kitchen, 3 Bedrooms, Family Bathroom.
Engine Room: Large room used formerly as a concert room seating close to 100 people. 3 storage rooms behind. Old cartshed and stables with potential to develop subject to statutory permissions being obtained. 2 small stone sheds, 2 garages and extensive walled garden some distance from the property.
Dunnet Head Lighthouse Keeper’s House: Royal Tea Perhaps
The garden was formerly used by the lighthouse keepers to provide their food. The property (for sale) is suitable as residential accommodation or holiday let cottages with the possibility of some commercial use subject to the usual consents. The property does require some modernisation subject to the appropriate planning and listed building consents where required.
Dunnet Head Lighthouse Keeper’s House: Example Kitchen
The official listing date for Dunnet Head was 28th November 1984: Grade B (here). Items such as the kitchen illustrated above have been modernised since. The listed building system is fairly complex and whilst replacing modern items such as a new fitted kitchen (which clearly is not the 1831 original) with a similar modern fitted kitchen does not damage any of the listed items, the planning law is still quite challenging. So we would recommend you seek guidance of a professional such as an architect with ‘listed building’ bona fides, to guide you. Or if you are unsure in any way, PLEASE contact the local planning authority and their ‘listed building’ officers for advice BEFORE you alter the building in any way.
If in doubt about fitting new bathrooms, kitchens or other issues that will change the character of a listed building, please contact the local authority planning department.
The advice from professionals in this field can be incredibly helpful and aid the preservation of iconic structures. Without this dedicated effort….
Just look at the horrendous state some listed buildings such as Ailsa Craig Lighthouse (Grade B) get into: Click Here.
We have a huge amount of distress when we see lighthouses become derelict and beyond repair. However we digress. Back to our favourite Dunnet Head Lighthouse Station…

This particular building is now marked “Under Offer” which in Scots conveyancing law is fairly firm – though sometimes such properties come back to market. We will do our best to alert subscribers if this property does come back for sale.

The inscription is above the door of the Lighthouse Store which was built to receive stores shipped in for Dunnet Head Lighthouse.
So it may still be possible, with a little dedication and ingenuity, to buy this Lighthouse Building at Dunnet Head from the current/new owner. Notwithstanding, it is recently classified via Aberdeen and Northern Estates – 01467 437000 as “under offer”. It might be an idea to give them your details in case the current sale [October 2013] doesn’t go through.
Though if the sale has gone through, there are always other options. You can always write a polite letter to the owners. Though this building appears unoccupied and boarded up. So you could do worse than read our …

One last point: if you do go up to Dunnet Head which is the most northerly point in the British Mainland, and end up at the actual Dunnet Head Lighthouse [a fair distance up the road], please do NOT do what dozy features writing this did. In order to obtain a better angle from which to photograph Dunnet Head Lighthouse, he stepped over a fairly low wall, only to discover on the other side of this wall was an old, thin, goat track separating him from his maker. Two more steps and a 300 foot sheer cliff drop down to the sea and jaggy rocks beneath. Rest assured, and even with a recent back operation, the adrenaline kicked in, and a very quick leap was made back to the safe side of the wall. After 25 years scampering around lighthouses you would think that the writer of this would know better. So PLEASE exercise caution when walking around any lighthouse location.
Writing of locations, for the record this Dunnet Head Lighthouse Store Building is as follows:-
Location: Lighthouse Store, Brough, Dunnet, Thurso, Caithness, KW14 8XR.
Tenure: Feuhold [Scottish Freehold Equivalent].
Guide: £10,000 – Currently Under Offer – Though Keep An Eye On This One: Either in case the current sale doesn’t complete, or possibly a developer buys it and puts a redeveloped Lighthouse Bothy back up for sale.
