Stoer Lighthouse Stores – Now Sold
Lighthouse Stores, Stoer Head (c) 2014 Bell Ingram
The Lighthouse Stores is a historic building erected in the late 1860’s prior to the building of Stoerhead Lighthouse completed in 1870. It was designed and engineered by David and Thomas Stevenson, Thomas being the father of Robert Louis Stevenson.

A stream forms the physical boundary of the triangular land, which the buildings occupy. A drive-able track and the beach complete the two other sides of the site.

The building itself is of solid stone construction but undeveloped [without water or electricity] but wind and water- tight and has an onduline-corrugated and insulated roof with a chimney and fireplace at the seaward end. It has a narrow window also to the south and the east elevation has a central door and generous windows on each side. The site is set within several hectares of common grazing and the small numbers of sheep, which mainly graze on higher ground, keep the grass to a reasonable length. This grazing extends the surrounding territory offering limitless space in which to relax.

The interior is a simple open plan with a sleeping platform above good storage spaces at the opposite end to the fireplace. Its most interesting feature is a wall drawing made by the men who built the lighthouse. This drawing, which has stood the ravages of time, is an accurate elevation of the Stoerhead building.

The nearest dwellings to the Store apart from the Salmon Bothy are about 1/2 a mile eastwards and consist of a small scattering of crofts called Raffin. Most of the residents are full time occupants. The nearest shops are either at Drumbeg, or Lochinver about 12 miles away. The latter is the larger location and offers a far greater variety of outlets.
